1. movie info - 1963. With a few months left in his sentence, thirty-eight year old convict Randall Patrick McMurphy - "Mac" - serving time for several assaults and statutory rape, has just been transferred from a labor camp associated with Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton to a psychiatric hospital. Mac has been able to use acting "crazy" - having a belligerent and smart-alecky attitude and anti-authoritarian behavior - to his benefit in not having to do any work. He is at the hospital as the authorities at Pendleton want him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to prove he is not crazy, believing this is all an act to get out of work. He believes this stint will get him out of any more work while he serves out the remainder of his sentence. He is placed in a ward with a group of men who have differing degrees of lucidity and control of their mental faculties. He continues to behave in the same manner as always to get what he wants, using the other patients either as accessories or things for his own amusement. He adds to his list of goals to do anything to annoy the ward's tyrannical head nurse, Miss Mildred Ratched, whose seeming want is to break the spirit of any of the men in her care. In his battle with Nurse Ratched, Mac eventually tries to help the men get a voice of their own while in the hospital, and for some for their eventual return to the outside world

Awesome analysis! There are things I have spotted in that movie but I never figured out about the fountain representing the establishment. McMurphy throwing some water from that fountain on a Monopoly game. What a coincidence! Also did you notice one of the female nurse whose working there. The south american small woman. She almost never talks. She's a kind of minion ghoul working under the totalitarian control of Miss Rachel. Same as all her afro american coworkers.

Every single character in this movie is memorable. Poor Cheswick.

If you find yourself working in the mental health field alongside patients and start to empathize with Nurse Ratchet. Please find another job! Antagonizing, manipulating, and belittling a human being with or without mental illness is never OK. I get it, having a job in this field is stressful and some patients are trying. But these behaviors are the defining features of evil in this world. Nurse Ratchet dehumanizes each of these men. Some are volunteering to be there and seek help but all she does is make them feel like prisoners. McMurphy isn't a saint but he tries to bring life back to these men that have lost themselves. In one of the group meetings McMurphy states that some of them aren't anymore crazy than the average person walking the streets. This is a poignant truth. In a world that constantly demands people to perform well out of their limit, it isn't far fetched to acknowledge significantly high rates of mental illness.

I choked down the book in three days. I loved it soo much XD. I must say, though, that I am quite surprised at how close the movie is to how I imagined this book. Its not completely accurate, but super close.
